Plants of Prairies and Savannas – part of a Free Monthly Nature and Ecology Workshop series with McHenry County Conservation District

Join Dr. Tom Simpson, Research Field Station Ecologist and Greg Rajsky, Director of Small Waters Education for McHenry County Conservation District’s next Spirit of Conservation workshop focusing on Plants of Prairies and Savannas on Saturday, July 11 from 9a.m.–2 p.m. at Pleasant Valley Conservation Area, 13315 Pleasant Valley Road, Woodstock.

Prairies and savannas were the most common ecosystem types where hundreds of plant species thrived in McHenry County prior to European contact. Learning to identify these plants will help the restorationist restore these ecosystems and appreciate their beauty and diversity.

The Spirit of Conservation program combines educational activities with land stewardship volunteer activities. Each day will involve hands-on field work, learning, conversation, a brown bag-it lunch and review of the day’s activities. Anyone age 16 and over interested in learning about ecological restoration and the spirit of conservation today is invited to join. The programs are FREE and open to the general public, existing land stewards, and other volunteers. All we ask for is your attention, your work, and your conversation.

Next workshop: August 15—Pleasant Valley Conservation Area, Theme:Vegetation management, Leaders: Tom Simpson, Research Field Station Ecologist and John Peters, Restoration Ecologist. Visit for additional summer and fall dates, locations, and themes.

Bring gloves and eye protection if you have it. Both will be provided if you don’t have them. Wear sturdy footwear and clothing appropriate for outdoor work and weather conditions. Bring a sack lunch and something to drink.

RSVP prior to each date is requested; contact Tom Simpson or (815) 678-4532 ext. 8218.
