The Field Museum is honored to present the 2016 Park/Gentry Award to biodiversity ecologist Uma Ramakrishnan, PhD who is working to save India's tigers. Once scattered around India, tigers today are threatened with extinction and only 7% of tiger habitat remains. Dr. Ramakrishnan is extracting DNA from 200-year-old tiger skins for comparison with modern tiger DNA. She has learned there is now very little genetic variation among tigers due to inbreeding. Further, certain groups, especially desert tigers, have become isolated from the rest of India's tiger population. Using the tools of modern conservation genetics, scientists can develop more options for conserving tiger populations across the rapidly urbanizing Indian landscape.
