Home gardeners, organizations, businesses, and government agencies that include native wildflowers and trees in their landscaping are invited to apply for the ‘Bringing Nature Home’ awards. The program, now in its fifth year, is sponsored by the Friends of Shirley Heinze Land Trust (FOSH).

To be eligible, plantings should be at least in the second growing season. They should consist primarily of true native plants, defined as those species found in Northwest Indiana before European settlement. Landscaping must be generally free of non-native “invasive” plants. Entrants must be located in Lake, Porter or LaPorte Counties.

For applications and information, visit, or call (219) 242-8558. The deadline for submitting applications is July 27.

In the past five years, FOSH has recognized thirty-five individuals and organizations that have planted and maintained native gardens and landscaping.  The group encourages and promotes native plantings because of the support they provide for birds, butterflies, bees and other pollinators. Native plants are perennials and, once established, they flourish in changeable weather conditions, survive drought, and require less care than annuals. They also add color, beauty, and variety to the landscape.

Information provided on the application form can be beneficial to those who wish to begin native plantings and apply in the future. FOSH has established a native prairie garden on the grounds of Meadowbrook Nature Preserve, located at 109 West 700 North, outside Valparaiso. The public is invited to visit.
